The U.S. Department of Energy launched the Low Carbon Communities in the Caribbean (LCCC) program at the June 2009 Energy and Climate Symposium of the Americas in Lima, Peru. DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) called for proposals from the nations of the Americas for technical assistance and collaborative work with DOE and its national labs on sustainable energy market transformation projects.
Caribbean Renewable Energy Strategy
This proposal, formulated jointly by the OAS and seven Caribbean countries, (St. Lucia, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts & Nevis, The Bahamas, Antigua & Barbuda, and St. Vincent & the Grenadines), aims to enable participating countries to implement actions and strategies geared towards increasing the sustainability of their energy supplies while reducing carbon emissions from the energy sector through the development and use of renewable energy and energy efficiency systems. In order to achieve this goal, the project will contribute to:
Enabling the development of local know-how to conduct energy efficiency audits and to deploy technologies and other measures that capitalize on the opportunities for efficiency improvements that are identified; and strengthening the capacity to review and evaluate resource assessments related to indigenous renewable natural resources.
